AI Revives Harry Houdini for Fox Nation Docuseries
A new three-part series uses artificial intelligence to recreate the legendary escape artist, marking the 100th anniversary of his death.
Harry Houdini is making a posthumous return this Halloween, brought back to life through artificial intelligence in a new three-part Fox Nation series titled "Houdini: Back from the Dead." The documentary aims to tell the story of the 20th-century entertainer and his death-defying stunts, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of his death on October 31, 1926.
The series employs AI to recreate Houdini, with an AI-generated version of the illusionist speaking in the introduction. "Ladies and gentlemen, one minute and 20 seconds, that's all they can find of my real voice," the AI persona states. "A scratchy recording, barely audible — but it is enough."
Filmmakers utilized over 400 historic photographs and archival footage to generate historically accurate visuals. Actors provided the movements and performances, which were then transformed using technology to recreate the appearances of Houdini and those close to him, including his wife, mother, brother, and friends. This approach allows these figures to recount his career and personal life.
"Houdini: Back from the Dead" is the first full-length, multi-episode production from Red Rock Films for Fox Nation to rely entirely on AI-generated imagery. The series includes a mock interview with Houdini, discussing his fears and the inherent risks of his performances. "Showmanship is the largest factor in any act," the AI-generated Houdini explains. "But the truth is, I've faced death hundreds, even thousands of times."
Lauren Petterson, president of Fox Nation, stated in a press release that the platform is "breaking new creative ground by using emerging technology to bring one of history's most fascinating figures to life for a modern audience."
