AI prodigy Leopold Aschenbrenner proceeded with his elaborate wedding weekend in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, even as his hedge fund, Situational Awareness, faced a staggering $30 billion loss, with figures escalating. The event gathered numerous prominent figures from Silicon Valley, many of whom were investors in Aschenbrenner's fund.
Aschenbrenner, 24, launched Situational Awareness in 2024 with several hundred million dollars. The fund, which focused on the infrastructure powering AI rather than chatbots themselves, quickly attracted a cult-like following. It raised $100 million in November 2024, with its fees reportedly surging over 1,000%. The fund's strategy involved significant leverage, using up to four times its capital, which amplified both gains and risks.
The wedding festivities, intended to include networking sessions on investment ideas and AI trends, were reportedly reshaped to focus on life and philosophy following the fund's financial distress. Despite the circumstances, the celebration continued, featuring Napa Valley wine and a DJ set. Attendees included figures from the tech and investment world, though Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei was reported to not be in attendance.
To mitigate the financial fallout, Aschenbrenner arranged to sell approximately $3.5 billion of the fund's private stake in Anthropic to venture capital investors. This deal was later superseded when Citadel, Ken Griffin's firm, agreed to acquire the majority of the fund's public equity portfolio, providing crucial liquidity.
Aschenbrenner's trajectory has been marked by rapid ascent and significant challenges. A graduate of Columbia University, he previously worked at Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX and later at OpenAI, where his tenure ended in April 2024 after allegations of sharing sensitive internal information. His departure from OpenAI involved sharing a document with Holden Karnofsky, which Aschenbrenner stated had been vetted and was typical for external researcher feedback.
