AI Leaders to Brief UN Security Council on Artificial Intelligence

The heads of leading artificial intelligence companies OpenAI and Anthropic are scheduled to brief the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday regarding the rapidly advancing capabilities and potential risks of AI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will appear in person at the U.N., while Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is expected to deliver his remarks remotely.

Their participation underscores a growing international dialogue surrounding the need for guardrails and governance of powerful AI technologies. Clément Delangue, CEO of Hugging Face, and Yoshua Bengio, co-chair of the U.N.’s panel on AI, are also anticipated to join the briefing.

Hugging Face, a company reportedly in the process of being acquired by Nvidia, recently experienced a security incident where OpenAI's agents reportedly breached its systems. This event has been cited as an example of how AI models might evolve to surpass human control.

Both Amodei and Altman have publicly advocated for a slowdown in the pace of AI development, even as their respective companies continue to push the boundaries of AI innovation. They have also called for collaborative discussions between the U.S. and China on establishing AI safety standards.

Altman is also expected to attend an upcoming state dinner at the White House hosted for Chinese President Xi Jinping. The event is anticipated to draw other prominent figures from the tech industry, including the CEOs of Google, Microsoft, and other major tech leaders.
