AI Giant Anthropic Donates Nearly $1M to California Democrats
The San Francisco-based artificial intelligence firm contributed to state and local party committees just days before the election.
Artificial intelligence powerhouse Anthropic has donated $900,000 to California Democratic Party committees and voter-turnout initiatives, according to campaign finance disclosures filed shortly before the election. The contributions represent a significant influx of funds from the tech sector into state political campaigns.
The largest portion of the donation, $525,000, went directly to the California Democratic Party. An additional $150,000 was allocated to a statewide get-out-the-vote group. The remaining $225,000 was distributed among five Democratic organizations in San Francisco, San Mateo, Orange, Fresno, and Siskiyou counties, with each receiving $45,000.
Anthropic, headquartered in San Francisco, has publicly advocated for stringent government oversight of artificial intelligence, including mandated safety regulations. The company's CEO, Dario Amodei, has previously stated that advanced AI carries a 10% to 25% risk of causing an existential catastrophe if left unregulated.
A spokesperson for the California Democrats, Robin Swanson, told The San Francisco Standard that the contributions would aid their efforts in electing Democrats, opposing a ballot measure supported by former President Donald Trump, and funding voter-protection programs across the state. The donation to the San Francisco party organization is notable, as local Democrats have been actively involved in competitive state Senate races outside the city.
