Affluent Residents Protest New Aldi; Councillor Mocks Concerns
Locals in Old St Mellons, Cardiff, object to a budget supermarket's arrival, citing character concerns, while a local official suggests wealthier residents would not complain about higher-end retailers.
Residents of the affluent suburb of Old St Mellons in Cardiff are protesting a newly approved plan to build an Aldi supermarket. The budget grocery chain is set to occupy a vacant car park serving an office complex, with plans including landscaping and sewage system upgrades.
Objectors argue that the development is out of keeping with the area's established character and that an Aldi store is not beneficial for an 'upmarket' location. Concerns were also raised about increased traffic, potential safety issues for schoolchildren, noise pollution from overnight deliveries, and the possibility of antisocial behavior.
One local resident told WalesOnline that Old St Mellons should maintain its affluent status and identity, warning that incremental development could fundamentally alter its character. Another expressed that the increased traffic would make navigation unsafe.
The community council also voiced objections, stating that the application would change the nature of the quiet residential district. The local Tesco, the only existing supermarket in the area, also submitted an objection.
However, Councillor Michael Michael of the Trowbridge ward defended the proposal, suggesting the Aldi would be a valuable addition. He remarked that if the development were for a higher-end store like Waitrose or Fortnum & Mason, a complaint from the community council would likely not be forthcoming. The council ultimately approved the plan, citing the provision of more affordable food options and local job creation as key benefits.
