In a recent advice column, Bel Mooney addressed two reader letters concerning difficult personal circumstances: childhood abuse and online romance scams.
One letter writer, 'Deirdre,' detailed a childhood marked by maternal neglect, physical abuse, and sexual assault by her stepfather. She described a home atmosphere that was "dangerous" and a mother who was "never maternal" and "good at smacking." Deirdre recounted enduring bullying, control, and criticism, which impacted her ability to pursue further education. She also mentioned experiencing further assaults after her father's death and later marrying a controlling partner. Deirdre is contemplating confronting her elderly mother and stepfather one last time, seeking an admission of wrongdoing from the stepfather, who had previously admitted his actions to her but denied them to her mother. Mooney advised against confronting the mother and stepfather, suggesting that revisiting the painful memories could cause further distress. Mooney acknowledged the writer's strength in overcoming adversity and finding happiness later in life, emphasizing her resilience and ability to focus on positive aspects.
The second letter writer, 'Helen,' described her concern for an elderly friend who has become involved with a purported fan site for actor Kevin Costner. The friend believes she has developed an emotional bond with Costner and is communicating with him via WhatsApp. She stated that Costner is experiencing financial and emotional difficulties and is unable to complete a film. Helen warned her friend about the scam, but the friend reacted with anger, accusing Helen of being too cynical. Mooney explained that such scams prey on loneliness and a desire for attention or glamour, referencing Costner's roles in popular media. Mooney suggested Helen persist in trying to dissuade her friend, even to the point of contacting the friend's family if necessary, to prevent potential negative consequences for her friend's well-being and finances.
Mooney concluded by reflecting on the internet's dual nature, acknowledging its usefulness while also highlighting its capacity for spreading harmful content and facilitating deceitful practices. She praised Deirdre's ability to draw meaning from her experiences and rise above painful truths, calling her an example of someone who controls how they deal with life's circumstances. Mooney also shared her own experience of finding relaxation by breaking her usual holiday habits, emphasizing the benefits of making changes to one's routine to feel energized and avoid boredom.
