The UK's Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has issued a warning regarding online advertisements for portable air conditioners that make potentially misleading claims. These ads, frequently appearing on platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, promote devices that they claim can cool entire rooms in as little as 90 seconds and are designed by former NASA engineers.

Some advertisements feature visuals that appear to be AI-generated, utilizing images of copper coils and metallic boxes to give the impression of sophisticated technology. The ASA noted that many of these ads employ exaggerated claims, suggesting that small units can rapidly cool entire homes or consume minimal electricity. Fake customer reviews, praising dramatic temperature drops or exceptional performance, are also common. The products advertised typically range in price from £70 to £120.

One online personality, YouTuber Stuart Matthews, purchased a device advertised for £70. He reported to the BBC that the product was essentially a simple fan worth only a few pounds. The ASA has approached Meta and YouTube for comment on the prevalence of these ads on their platforms.
