Gen Z is experiencing a significant decline in sexual activity, a phenomenon often referred to as a "sex recession." However, adult film performer Alix Lynx contends that the issue is not pornography, but rather the pervasive influence of social media and dating applications.

A study by the Kinsey Institute has indicated that young adults are reporting historically low levels of sexual activity, despite expressing a desire for intimacy. Lynx, a 37-year-old performer with 14 years in the adult industry, believes that an excessive focus on instant gratification, amplified by digital platforms, is actively detrimental to romantic and sexual connections.

"Honestly, I think porn is the least of it," Lynx stated. "Porn has always existed. I think social media and dating apps are much bigger factors." She suggests that these platforms encourage young people to remain indoors rather than engaging in real-world interactions, making it challenging to find sexual partners. The ease of swiping through profiles and messaging potential partners offers immediate validation, allowing for communication without physical encounters.

Lynx warns that an over-reliance on digital communication can limit individuals' experiences and lead to viewing life primarily through a screen. She transitioned to the adult entertainment industry in 2014 after leaving a corporate career. While she doesn't identify pornography as the primary driver of Gen Z's intimacy issues, she acknowledges it is not without fault. Unrealistic depictions in adult films can skew expectations and lead to awkward real-life encounters.

"I’ve hooked up with guys in the past who pulled moves on me that I know they saw in my scenes," she revealed. "I’m sitting there thinking, ‘That’s something I do when I’m performing, not in real life.’ It creates a major disconnect because porn is performance art, not a blueprint for intimacy."

Furthermore, Lynx asserts that dating apps create an illusion of an endless supply of potential partners, discouraging singles from forming lasting connections as they continuously seek better matches. This digital
