Adrien Brody, the Academy Award-winning actor, was recently seen riding the New York City subway alongside a friend, adopting a low profile as he navigated the public transit system.
Brody, a native New Yorker, appeared incognito in an all-black ensemble, complete with a baseball cap, T-shirt, pants, and sneakers. The sighting occurred during his recent return to the city for his Broadway debut.
He recently concluded his limited engagement in "The Fear of 13," a Broadway play in which he portrayed death row inmate Nick Yarris. The show opened on April 15 and Brody's final performance was on June 28 at the James Earl Jones Theatre. Earlier in May, Brody hosted an intimate dinner at Estelle's in the Meatpacking District to celebrate the play's success with castmates, friends, and family.
Despite his Broadway commitments, Brody frequently splits his time between New York City and his upstate New York castle, where he resides with his partner, Georgina Chapman. He was born and raised in Queens, having grown up in Woodhaven and Jackson Heights.
Brody has often spoken about the significant influence his New York upbringing had on him. In an interview earlier this year, he recalled taking the subway extensively for drama school. "I had to take four trains each way to go to drama school," he said, noting that he attended LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. "I got accepted to Performing Arts, and it was a public school, but it gave me a wonderful foundation early on."
He has previously suggested that his subway commutes provided a unique form of acting training. "I feel like my real acting training came from going to and from school on four different trains each way, because of how many human beings I’ve encountered," he told Fade In magazine in 2009. He described observing a wide range of people, from "homeless people and immigrant workers and shark businessmen and every kind of human being," which fueled his fascination with human mannerisms. Brody explained that he would retain details and evoke them later, finding inspiration in the diverse individuals he encountered.
