Adam Vinatieri, the NFL's all-time leading scorer and a four-time Super Bowl champion, used his Hall of Fame induction speech on Saturday to deliver a series of lighthearted roasts directed at former teammates and coaches, including Bill Belichick and Pat McAfee. Vinatieri was enshrined alongside Larry Fitzgerald, Roger Craig, Luke Kuechly, and Drew Brees.
During his speech, Vinatieri made a jest about his former New England Patriots coach, Bill Belichick, referencing his relationship with Jordon Hudson. "Unfortunately, Bill couldn't make it here today," Vinatieri said, referencing reports about activities at UNC and Belichick potentially being on a recruiting trip. "But in truth, it's because he's judging his girlfriend's cheerleading competition."
Despite the playful jab, Vinatieri acknowledged Belichick's impact, stating, "Thank you for demanding excellence every single day. Your preparation, discipline and attention to detail shaped far more than my football career."
Vinatieri also targeted former Colts punter and his ex-teammate Pat McAfee, who served as his holder. "McAfee is the only person who enjoyed holding my balls more than my wife," Vinatieri quipped. McAfee was Vinatieri's place holder for field goals during their time with the Indianapolis Colts.
Additionally, Vinatieri thanked Peyton Manning, joking about the quarterback's forehead being used as a teleprompter. "A gigantic forehead means a big brain, and your football IQ is unmatched, buddy," Vinatieri said. "The way you managed the offense, the team, everything in the entire organization, was incredible. Your leadership led this team to greatness."
Vinatieri revealed a personal detail about his attire for the ceremony: he wore a tie belonging to the late Colts owner Jim Irsay. The tie was a late addition to his outfit, given to him by Irsay's daughters, including current Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon.
Irsay, who owned the Colts from 1997 until his death in May at age 65, had been open about his struggles with alcoholism and painkiller addiction. The FBI is reportedly investigating Irsay's death.
During his enshrinement, former running back Roger Craig announced that he had been diagnosed with vascular dementia.
