Attendees at the July 3 wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce initially believed actor Adam Sandler's role as officiant was a joke, according to Jonathan Thomas, CEO of American Century Investments and a guest at the ceremony.

Thomas described the scene on The Compound and Friends podcast, recalling that when Sandler appeared, "everybody laughed and thought it was a joke at first." The presence of the 59-year-old comedian, who had a cameo in "Happy Gilmore 2" with Kelce, was met with amusement until it became clear he was serious.

Sandler was legally ordained to perform the ceremony at Madison Square Garden. Thomas noted that Sandler's address to the couple lasted for 20 to 30 minutes, blending humor with sincere sentiments and song. He recalled Sandler's version of the traditional vow, "For rich or for poor," as "You’re not going to have to worry about that," a nod to Swift's estimated $2 billion net worth and Kelce's considerable NFL earnings. Sandler also advised the couple to "Kiss each other every day, in the morning, at night after dinner, just kiss often."

Personal Vows and Reception Details

Thomas also shared details about the couple's personal vows. Kelce spoke first for approximately 30 minutes, making himself "unbelievably vulnerable," which moved many attendees, including "300-pound men from the football business," to tears. Swift followed with her own poetic and well-crafted vows, also speaking for about 30 minutes.

The reception featured a transformed Madison Square Garden, with guests walking through a built castle that housed games and giveaways. Musical performances began with Swift and Paul McCartney, followed by Swift and Stevie Nicks. Throughout the evening, numerous figures from the entertainment industry joined them on stage to perform songs.

Thomas recounted being on the dance floor surrounded by celebrities such as McCartney, Brad Pitt, and Cindy Crawford, emphasizing that Swift and Kelce had meticulously planned the event to ensure their guests were entertained. "They went over the top to make sure everybody had a great time," Thomas said.

However, not all aspects of the celebration were met with universal approval. An insider told the Daily Mail that Lena Dunham's dinner speech, which reportedly included the line, "American football is just straight guys reenacting gay porn," elicited "gasps and laughs." The couple's raffle, where guests received expensive gifts like Chanel bags, was also described as "really bizarre" by the same insider.
