Adam Peaty's Former Friend Michael Gunning Reflects on 'Dark Times' After Wedding Snub
Swimmer Michael Gunning accepted the Sports Personality award at The Ethnicity Awards, dedicating it to those who have felt alone, following a period of personal change and the end of his close friendship with Olympic champion Adam Peaty.
Michael Gunning, a former international swimmer, has spoken of navigating "dark times" and loneliness, dedicating his Sports Personality award at The Ethnicity Awards to "anyone who has felt alone." The 32-year-old athlete delivered a moving acceptance speech on Thursday night, thanking supporters for "shining a light" during difficult periods.
Acknowledging Personal Change
The awards ceremony celebrated individuals and organizations supporting Black, Asian, and diverse ethnic communities. Gunning's win comes after a year of significant personal shifts, including the dissolution of his once-close bond with Olympic champion Adam Peaty.
For years, Gunning and Peaty trained together, with Peaty notably allowing Gunning to use his home pool during lockdown when Gunning's Olympic aspirations were at risk. Gunning had previously credited Peaty as a key ally, stating he would not be where he is without his support.
Reports indicated that Gunning was not invited to Peaty's wedding to Holly Ramsay in December, with speculation suggesting Gunning was considered "too close" to Peaty's mother, Caroline.
Shortly before the wedding, Gunning reflected on his Instagram about a year of new experiences and evolving friendships. He wrote about travelling, discovering more about himself, taking risks, experiencing lost and new friendships, and facing numerous rejections while stepping outside his comfort zone. Gunning noted his learning that "change can be a really beautiful thing" and the importance of pursuing one's dreams.
Processing Friendships Through Therapy
Gunning has previously stated that therapy has aided him in processing people leaving his life, emphasizing he holds no bitterness towards his former friend. He expressed gratitude for the memories and Peaty's past support, acknowledging that people enter and leave one's life. Gunning added that he wished Adam, Holly, and their unborn daughter happiness.
He was among a group of honorees that included singer Heather Small and television presenters Charlene White and Gok Wan, as well as EastEnders actress Diane Parish.
