Adam Lambert Surprises at MTV VMAs 2026 with George Michael Tribute

Adam Lambert made a surprise appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards 2026 on Sunday night to pay tribute to George Michael, a decade after the pop music icon's death at age 53. The tribute to Michael, who died on Christmas Day in 2016, began with Orville Peck introducing the segment, followed by Sombr performing an energetic rendition of "Faith" and a heartfelt version of "Father Figure."

Raye then joined the stage for a soulful rendition of Michael's 1987 duet with Aretha Franklin, "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)," while Teddy Swims delivered a classic performance of "Careless Whisper."

The pace quickened as Lambert, clad in a studded black outfit, performed an energetic cover of Michael's "Freedom! ('90)." He was joined by a chorus of backup singers and musicians, as well as Sombr, Raye, and Swims, who all sang and danced along.

The tribute to Michael, a four-time VMA winner, was first announced Sept. 22, with Raye, Sombr, and Teddy Swims confirmed as performers. The timing of the event coincides with the upcoming release of a concert film and live album revisiting Michael's "Faith Tour," set to premiere on December 11. This release marks a significant moment as Michael's debut solo album, "Faith," approaches its 40th anniversary since its 1987 debut.

Van Toffler, the VMAs producer and a former MTV executive, told Billboard that the upcoming film, which includes previously unreleased footage, contributed to the tribute feeling particularly timely. Toffler recalled Michael's "unbelievable" performance of "Freedom! '90" during MTV's 10th anniversary special in 1991, highlighting Michael's significant impact on MTV's history.

Toffler also noted that Michael's music continues to inspire contemporary artists like Raye, Sombr, and Swims, all of whom are fans of the late singer. "We think it'll be a killer moment to recognize those great songs," Toffler stated regarding the tribute's aim to celebrate Michael's musical legacy. When asked about the involvement of Andrew Ridgeley of Wham! or Michael's estate, Toffler clarified that the VMAs were focused on celebrating Michael's songs rather than presenting him with an award.

Raye, 28, made her solo VMAs performance debut during the show and was nominated for two awards, including Song of the Year. Sombr, 21, returned to the VMAs stage for the tribute after his debut the previous year, where he received three nominations. Swims, 33, marked his return to the VMAs after a hiatus since 2024, when his hit "Lose Control" garnered four nominations.
