Adam Fox's Contract Evolves From Market-Setting to NHL Bargain

When Adam Fox signed his contract extension with the New York Rangers five years ago, it reset the market for defensemen and placed him among the league's top earners. His seven-year, $66.5 million deal, carrying an average annual value of $9.5 million, was secured after his Norris Trophy-winning 2020-21 season, and he has largely met the high expectations since. However, as the market for defensemen has continued to break records with subsequent lucrative contracts, Fox's annual salary has transformed into a notable bargain for the Rangers.

Recent contract agreements highlight this shift. Avalanche star Cale Makar signed an extension over the summer that made him the first NHL player to surpass $20 million in average annual value, with a total of $163.2 million. Defenseman Quinn Hughes is also expected to command a salary exceeding Makar's, regardless of whether he signs an extension with his current team or becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Fox is eligible for an extension once the 2027-28 season concludes, as he approaches the final year of his current contract. At that point, he will be 30 years old, and 31 when his existing deal expires. The Rangers will then face the challenge of negotiating a new contract in a market shaped by rising salary caps and escalating player valuations, determining the future cost of retaining Fox.

This re-evaluation of Fox's contract is particularly relevant as it coincides with the anniversary of his extension, his 500th career game, and his strong performance at the start of the current season. Through the Rangers' first 13 games, Fox recorded 16 assists, leading all defensemen and trailing only Connor McDavid in league-wide assists. His overall point total ranked 12th in the NHL and led all Rangers players, projecting a 103-point pace that would surpass his previous career high of 74 points set in the 2021-22 season.
