Actress Joanna Miles, an Emmy award winner recognized for her role in a television adaptation of "The Glass Menagerie" and her appearance on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," has reached her 86th birthday. Miles was recently observed in Los Angeles, appearing sprightly while braving the summer heat.

Born in Nice, France, in March 1940, Miles' early life was shaped by her painter parents, American Jeanne Patterson Miles and Dutch national Johannes Schiefer. Fleeing the Nazi invasion of France when she was an infant, her mother's U.S. citizenship facilitated the family's escape to America. Miles later pursued acting, studying at the Actors Studio in New York City during the 1960s, where her classmates included Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, and Robert De Niro.

Her career breakthrough occurred in 1973 with her portrayal of Laura Wingfield in a television film adaptation of Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie." The role earned her two Emmy awards: Supporting Actress of the Year and the Super Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in Drama. In this production, she starred opposite Katharine Hepburn, who played Amanda Wingfield, the domineering mother. Miles recalled Hepburn as an "exciting person" who made the set a demanding environment.

Miles' extensive filmography includes roles in diverse projects. She appeared in the 1975 post-apocalyptic film "The Ultimate Warrior" alongside Yul Brynner and Max von Sydow. Her television credits include guest spots on numerous series such as "Kojak," "NYPD," "All My Children," "The Incredible Hulk," and "Dallas."

She also took on a supporting role in the 1995 film "Judge Dredd," starring Sylvester Stallone. In "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Miles portrayed Perrin, the second wife of Sarek, Spock's father. Reflecting on her time on the show, she noted that "Star Trek was such an unlikely job for me," but acknowledged her continued invitation to conventions.

Further collaborations include a role in the 2007 comedy "Sex and Breakfast," which featured Macaulay Culkin, and the 2001 television movie "Crossfire Trail" with Tom Selleck. Although her most recent screen role was in the 2013 TV movie "Hunt for the Labyrinth Killer," she continued to perform on stage, appearing in the 2015 play "Front Door Open."

Miles has been married to producer and writer Michael Brandman since 1978, with whom she has one son.
