Rachel Buffett, an actress convicted as an accessory after the fact in the 2010 murders of Julie Kibuishi and Samuel Herr, exhibited disturbing behavior and made a chilling remark to a former friend shortly before the killings, according to an account from that friend.
Audrey, who spoke with Fox News Digital and is featured in the Investigation Discovery series "A Killer Among Friends," stated that approximately one month before Kibuishi and Herr were murdered, Buffett, then engaged to Daniel Wozniak, encouraged Audrey to take ecstasy. When Audrey expressed reservations, Buffett allegedly replied, "Well, if I slipped it in your drink, you wouldn’t know about it."
Audrey described this comment as the final straw in their friendship, recalling that when Buffett and Wozniak were drunk, they would frequently become aggressive and yell at those around them. "I really believed Rachel would have drugged me at her bachelorette party because she thought it would be fun," Audrey recounted.
Buffett, who was not accused of committing the murders but was found guilty in 2018 of two felony counts of being an accessory after the fact for allegedly misleading investigators, was engaged to Wozniak. The couple was set to marry a week after Kibuishi and Herr were killed.
Kibuishi was found shot to death in Herr's apartment, and Herr was missing. Police initially suspected Herr might have killed Kibuishi before fleeing, but this theory changed when it was discovered that someone was withdrawing money from Herr's bank account. Investigators traced these transactions to Wesley Freilich, who stated that Wozniak had given him Herr's ATM card and instructed him to withdraw cash. Wozniak was arrested at his bachelor party and later confessed to the murders, citing "money and insanity" as his motives. Prosecutors stated Wozniak killed and dismembered Herr to steal approximately $62,000 from his military savings and then killed Kibuishi, attempting to frame Herr for her murder.
Buffett maintained her innocence, telling NBC's "Dateline" that she had no advance knowledge of the murders. In 2012, she was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory after the fact, with prosecutors alleging she lied to and misled police while attempting to protect Wozniak. She was sentenced in 2018 to 32 months in jail.
Audrey recalled her friendship with Buffett, which began in college while they studied theater, describing Buffett as initially "fun and bubbly." She met Kibuishi and Herr through mutual friends and remembered them as "delightful, funny, warm and loving." After her falling out with Buffett, Audrey expressed sorrow for what Buffett might be experiencing following Wozniak's arrest, but was taken aback by Buffett's response, which she interpreted as accusatory and self-serving.
Buffett was sentenced to death in 2016, and Buffett received her sentence in 2018.
