A Hollywood actor, Jason Hoganson, who was photographed giving a thumbs-up as he left prison during a large-scale early release program in September 2024, died of natural causes and drug use, a coroner's inquest has found. Hoganson, 55, was released from HMP Durham after serving half of an 18-month sentence for assaulting his ex-partner.
His death on April 4, 2026, was attributed to bronchopneumonia, with drug addiction identified as a significant contributory factor, the Newcastle Coroner's Court was told. Hoganson had a history of alcohol and drug abuse, and his engagement with support services had been described as erratic, partly due to his homelessness following his release.
Hoganson was known for his leading role in the 1987 cult film "Empire State." However, his acting career stalled as he struggled with substance abuse and legal issues. After his prison release, he had been living on the streets.
Just 48 hours after his release in September 2024, Hoganson was arrested on suspicion of breaching a restraining order and assault in connection with an attack on his ex-partner, Rachel Usher. He was subsequently jailed for 18 months, a sentence he had largely already served on remand.
Ms. Usher, who had a history of domestic abuse with Hoganson over their six-year relationship, described him as frequently violent. She reported an incident where he slapped her forcefully outside her flat. Hoganson claimed he was retrieving personal belongings and alleged a man at the flat was having an affair with Ms. Usher, a claim that led to his removal from court for shouting obscenities.
Hoganson, originally from Wallsend, had accumulated over 100 convictions. His defense counsel had previously noted that his early success in "Empire State" was challenging for him to handle, leading to a downward spiral involving drink and drugs, despite a complex mental health history. During his time on remand, he had reportedly mentored other inmates.
