Actor Jeff Kober pursued his own Emmy campaign for a Best Guest Actor in a Drama nomination for his role on the HBO medical procedural 'The Pitt,' opting to self-fund the submission process. Kober, 72, was not part of HBO's official Emmy submissions for the series but decided to campaign independently, citing the relatively low cost of the submission fee and his belief in the quality of his work.
Kober, who portrays motorcycle guru Duke on the show, stated that he has self-submitted for awards in the past, particularly during his time in the soap opera world. He described the decision as a "no-brainer" and emphasized the importance of supporting one's own work.
His self-funded effort has resulted in a nomination, placing him among formidable contenders including previous Emmy winners Bradley Whitford and Jeff Hiller, as well as Oscar nominees Colman Domingo and Jonathan Pryce, and his 'The Pitt' castmate Ernest Harden Jr.
Kober is a seasoned actor with a career spanning decades, including a regular role on the soap opera 'General Hospital,' for which he recently received a Daytime Emmy nomination. He has also made guest appearances on shows such as 'Highway to Heaven' and 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' and multiple 'NCIS' and 'CSI' series.
He is not the only performer from 'The Pitt' to self-submit. Actress Brittany Allen, 40, also pursued her own campaign and secured a nomination in the Best Guest Actress in a Drama category. She is nominated alongside castmates Tal Anderson and Tina Ivlev.
'The Pitt' has garnered significant attention, receiving 25 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including a nod for Best Drama Series. The series has achieved critical praise and several awards, with Noah Wyle, who stars as Dr. Michael 'Robby' Robinavitch, earning a nomination for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Wyle previously won this award for the show's first season.
The series has also faced reports of on-set turmoil, including bullying allegations and cast changes, such as the departure of actress Supriya Ganesh, who had appeared in all 30 episodes of the series prior to her exit at the conclusion of season two. Despite these rumors, 'The Pitt' has been a commercial and critical success for HBO.
Nominations were announced last Wednesday. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards are scheduled for September 5 and 6, with the main Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony set to be broadcast live on NBC and Peacock on September 14. The comedy series 'Hacks' received the second-highest number of nominations with 24, including a Best Actress in a Comedy nod for Jean Smart.
