Burke, who also appeared in "Coronation Street" in two separate roles, was survived by his wife, fellow actress Anna Calder-Marshall, and their son, Tom Burke. His estate was left to Calder-Marshall, whom he married 55 years ago in 1971. The gross value of his estate was £84,407, which was reduced to £77,912 after deductions. His will was written on September 29, 2011, and his wife and son are named as executors.
Born in Liverpool, Burke displayed an early ambition to become an actor, winning a scholarship to Oxford University to study classics. He later trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and established a career across television, radio, and stage. His stage credits include a role as Kent in a National Theatre production of "King Lear" alongside Ian Holm. He also appeared in television series such as "Midsomer Murders" and "Heartbeat."
In "Sherlock Holmes," Burke's interpretation of Dr. Watson was noted for elevating the character from a perceived foolish sidekick to a respected ally of Sherlock Holmes, influencing subsequent depictions of the role. He starred opposite Jeremy Brett, who played Holmes.
Burke's son, Tom Burke, followed in his parents' footsteps and has established his own acting career, appearing in "The Musketeers," "Strike," and the Netflix series "Legends."
Burke reportedly declined to participate in a second series of a show in 1985, citing feelings of guilt about being away from his family. He told his son that the decision was his, as he wanted to balance work with being a father and admitted he was "getting bored of saying, 'Good heavens, Holmes.'"
