A Maryland-based political activist has drawn criticism online for misidentifying Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello as white and subsequently criticizing his voting decisions.
Tiffany Carlock, known online as Candidly Tiff, shared a video clip where Morello told Rolling Stone that he did not vote for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Carlock added a comment stating, "I don't know who this white man is, but I'm not surprised he didn't vote for Kamala in the 2024 election. Like many others, he chose to say f*** you to the rest of us."
Online users quickly pointed out that Morello is black. Morello's late mother was of Italian and Irish descent, and his father was Kenya's first ambassador to the United Nations. Users informed Carlock that Morello is biracial and has a history of activism.
In response to the feedback, Carlock acknowledged that Morello is "half white and half black" but maintained her stance, stating, "doesn't change anything still don't know this man and he said f*** the rest of us. That makes it even more disappointing."
Morello, 62, explained his decision not to vote for Harris by referencing his disillusionment with the Democratic Party and the electoral system, which he described as "corporate-controlled" and "illegitimate." He also cited the ongoing situation in Gaza as a factor in his decision, stating he "couldn't choke down voting for a candidate - I understand it - that is responsible for what happened in Gaza."
When asked about his voting history, Morello indicated he could not recall the last time he voted for a Democratic candidate. He also commented on his relationship with Bruce Springsteen, another musician who endorsed Harris, stating that while they might disagree on political matters, he respects Springsteen's views and believes the respect is mutual.
Morello's comments coincided with the launch of his Power to People festival in Maryland, which featured other prominent musicians and aimed to promote voter turnout. Carlock, described as a "grassroots political advocate and unapologetic truth-teller," frequently shares her political views on social media and her YouTube channel.
