Accused Teen Killer "Cookie" Freed on $2 Million Bail in Texas Slaying

Amaya Cookie Diaz, a 19-year-old facing first-degree murder charges in the stabbing death of a Texas mother of five, has been released from jail after posting a $2 million bond. Diaz, along with her sister Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, and their friend Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, are accused of killing Caroline “Caro” Peña during a daylight altercation in Del Rio on June 25.

Representatives from the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office and Correctional Facility confirmed Diaz’s release on Tuesday. The Diaz family reportedly paid $200,000 in cash for her bond. Her sister, Kitty, remains in custody.

Details surrounding the bond arrangement remain confidential, according to El Amigo Bonding, a representative of which stated that "justice will prevail."

Neither of the Diaz sisters has entered a plea. They, along with Faz, face charges of murder and tampering with evidence. The alleged crime unfolded after Faz told police that Peña had arrived at her residence intending to start a fight. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Peña’s vehicle arriving at Faz's home, followed shortly by the arrival of Cookie Diaz and Kitty Diaz. The video allegedly depicts Cookie Diaz exiting a vehicle and confronting Peña while holding an object believed to be a knife.

According to the complaint, Diaz is seen striking Peña in the back. Kitty Diaz and Faz are then alleged to have joined in, beating Peña before fleeing the scene. Peña was reportedly transported to a local hospital by her nephew and died from her stab wounds approximately seven hours later in San Antonio.

Police have not yet disclosed a motive for the alleged attack or the relationship between the defendants and Peña. Faz has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody on a $5.2 million bond, with a pre-trial hearing scheduled for December 11. Cookie Diaz’s arraignment is set for November 4, while Kitty Diaz’s next court date has not yet been scheduled.

Both Diaz sisters had their bonds reduced from $5 million to $2 million in a previous court hearing.
