Abingdon Claims Victory in Historic Schools Rugby Trophy Match
Over 1,500 spectators watched Abingdon defeat St Edward's 21-17 at Iffley Road, a venue famed for Roger Bannister's sub-four-minute mile.
The iconic Iffley Road venue in Oxford, renowned for Sir Roger Bannister's 1954 sub-four-minute mile, hosted a significant match in the 2026 SOCS Daily Mail Schools Trophy on Friday night. Abingdon secured a 21-17 victory over local rivals St Edward's in front of a crowd exceeding 1,500 attendees.
St Edward's director of rugby, Joe Winpenny, expressed disappointment, stating his team failed to capitalize on early possession and advantage. Abingdon repelled this initial pressure and converted their opportunities. No. 8 Conor Mead was a key figure for Abingdon, scoring two tries, including one from his own half, to give his team a 14-5 lead at halftime. A third try shortly after the break extended Abingdon's lead, allowing them to withstand a late surge from St Edward's, which included two tries from captain Jonnie Perkins.
Abingdon coach Jon Vermont described the atmosphere as exceptional and a testament to the growing profile of school rugby. He highlighted the physicality of the match and Abingdon's clinical finishing and defense.
Both Abingdon and St Edward's have ties to the Gloucester Academy and are actively enhancing their fixture lists. The match is part of a trend in the Schools Trophy to hold games at neutral venues to promote the sport, similar to the annual clash at Worcester's Sixways Stadium between King's and RGS Worcester.
Elsewhere in the competition, Brighton College captain Hugo Bressard has scored four tries in three games. Haberdashers’ Monmouth has taken the lead in the Trophy standings following a 49-17 win against Hereford Sixth Form College. This victory follows earlier wins against Christ College and Bromsgrove. Seaford College, who recently led the competition, lost 46-38 to last season's champions, Northampton School for Boys (NSB).
Upcoming fixtures include Northampton School for Boys playing Berkhamsted School, the 2021 champions, and Haberdashers’ Monmouth facing Sir Thomas Rich’s. The Schools Rugby Trophy is run in partnership with SOCS.
