Aberfan Survivors Recount Traumatic Memories 60 Years After Disaster

Sixty years after a catastrophic coal waste tip collapsed onto a Welsh village, survivors who were children at the time are sharing their harrowing memories of the disaster. The landslide in Aberfan, Wales, on October 21, 1966, buried Pantglas Junior School and numerous homes under tons of coal slurry.

Gerald Kirwan, who was a child during the event, recounted to BBC Newsnight that his initial thought was of an earthquake. He described finding a classmate unresponsive amidst the devastation. Another survivor, Gaynor Madgwick, recalled regaining consciousness to find herself submerged up to her chest in the massive slurry.

The disaster claimed the lives of 116 children and 28 adults. The Aberfan disaster remains a deeply traumatic event in Welsh history, with survivors and families continuing to grapple with its profound impact decades later.
