Police Scotland has arrested and charged a 50-year-old individual in connection with comments made about former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe. The case initially saw no criminality reported by Police Scotland, but this has since changed with the recent charge.

The incident involved remarks made about Widdecombe prior to her death being treated as an alleged murder. Aberdeen University, where the accused is reportedly a worker, had stated the matter was under review.

Widdecombe was found dead at her home in Devon last Thursday with serious injuries. A separate investigation is underway concerning a 28-year-old man from Rotherham, who was initially arrested on suspicion of murder and has since been re-arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of Counter Terrorism Policing, described Widdecombe's death as a "brutal" and "targeted attack" and confirmed a counter-terrorism investigation is running parallel to the murder investigation.
