Abbott Warns Texas Senate Race Could Doom GOP's White House Hopes
Governor Greg Abbott sounded the alarm that a Democratic victory in the Lone Star State could significantly hinder Republican presidential aspirations.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has warned that a Democratic victory in the state's upcoming Senate race could prove disastrous for the Republican Party's chances of regaining the White House in 2028. Speaking on Sean Hannity's radio show, Abbott emphasized the critical role Texas plays in national elections, stating, "If we lose Texas, there's no chance ever for the future of the United States."
Recent polling indicates a tightening race, with Democratic candidate James Talarico at times surpassing Trump-backed Republican Ken Paxton. A poll from the Texas Public Opinion Research institute showed Talarico leading Paxton by four points, 51 percent to 47 percent.
Abbott stressed the importance of Republican turnout, warning that if voters stay home, "it's going to put Texas at risk. It's going to put the United States at risk." He and Hannity agreed that a Democratic win in Texas would give the party a significant advantage in the Electoral College, making future presidential victories for Republicans nearly impossible.
Talarico could become the first Democrat to win a statewide federal race in Texas in 32 years. Paxton's campaign has been marred by several scandals. In May, reports surfaced that the Texas Attorney General had been living in a separate residence with a mistress while his wife still lived in their marital home. His wife had previously filed for divorce on "Biblical grounds."
Paxton also faced accusations of attempting to snatch a phone from a man who was filming him with his mistress outside a restaurant in London. This incident occurred shortly after they were reportedly seen together in Iceland. More recently, Paxton was reportedly seen in Dubai with businessmen indicted on federal healthcare fraud charges.
Despite these challenges, Abbott urged Republicans to mobilize, stating that if "all Republicans will go vote, we're going to win this race." He acknowledged that while more registered Republicans exist in Texas, their participation is crucial for victory. Abbott himself is also facing a re-election bid against Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa, holding a narrow lead in recent polls.
