Aaron Rodgers Criticizes NFL Owners Over International Game Plans

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has criticized NFL owners, describing them as "tight" and suggesting their focus on revenue is impeding the league's international growth. Rodgers made these remarks following the Steelers' game against the New Orleans Saints in Paris, which marked the NFL's first-ever game in France.

The NFL has been increasing its international presence, with a record nine games scheduled outside the United States this season across various cities including Melbourne, Rio de Janeiro, London, Madrid, Munich, and Mexico City.

Rodgers revealed that there were past discussions between league officials and the NFL Players Association about a concept for an "international week." This plan would have involved games in 16 different international locations, potentially offering teams an additional bye week. "I think it would've been phenomenal for the game," Rodgers stated. "Now, the owners wanted to push for 17 games for the extra revenue and because they care so much about player safety, but it would've been nice."

He suggested that expanding the league's reach globally, possibly to locations like the United Arab Emirates or other South American countries, presents significant opportunities. "I wish there was a mandate, though, from the league," Rodgers added. "They would have to open up their pocketbooks, too, which - you know, maybe they're a little tight on money and stuff."

Rodgers implied that owners might be reluctant to invest more resources needed for such international initiatives, particularly if it impacts their bottom line. He also suggested that owners are hesitant to mandate broader community outreach and cultural engagement during these international trips, which he believes would benefit the game.

The comments come as the NFL proceeded with its Paris game despite ongoing protests and clashes in France. The league stated it was working closely with local authorities and partners on security matters and that there had been no disruption to league sites.

On the field, Rodgers, 42, played a key role in the Steelers' 16-10 victory over the Saints. He completed 19 of 30 passes for 212 yards, threw his 540th career touchdown pass, moving him past Peyton Manning for third in NFL history, and also scrambled for a crucial first down late in the game. Running back Jaylen Warren added 101 rushing yards on 18 carries, contributing to the Steelers' third consecutive win, bringing their record to 5-2.
