The San Francisco 49ers face an unexpected challenge with the return of Aaron Donald to the Los Angeles Rams. General Manager John Lynch expressed surprise at the future Hall of Famer's decision to come out of retirement, stating that the team must prepare for his impact.

It remains to be seen if Donald, 35, will be in game shape for the Rams' season opener against the 49ers in Australia next Thursday. However, he is already practicing, and his history suggests a quick return is possible. In 2018, Donald returned from a holdout to play a significant number of snaps in the Rams' season opener.

"The guy's different, right? He's an exceptional player. One of the greats," Lynch said of Donald. "Now, there's time away. But I know that guy trains like a bad man."

Donald's comeback strengthens an already formidable Rams defense, which added multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards and Super Bowl rings through acquisitions like Myles Garrett. This move is seen as a significant development in the competitive NFC West.

The 49ers themselves have navigated a turbulent summer, including a coaching car crash and off-field issues involving players and ownership. Despite these challenges, Lynch maintains confidence in his team's talent.

However, the 49ers' offensive line, particularly at left guard, remains a point of concern. With multiple players rotating through the position and the recent addition of Jarrett Patterson, the interior offensive line could be vulnerable, especially if Donald is on the field for even a limited number of snaps.

"We haven't had [those] three practices yet [this week] and we just added a new guy [guard/center Jarrett Patterson] to the group, too," coach Kyle Shanahan said. "So, it's truly fluid."

In other injury news, defensive end Nick Bosa (knee) has not practiced since early August but is expected to return to practice this week. Tight end George Kittle is also anticipated to rejoin team drills. Several other players, including guard Dominick Puni and safety Malik Mustapha, returned to practice Monday. Mike Vaccaro
