The San Francisco 49ers are navigating a tumultuous summer marked by off-field incidents and player health concerns, a situation now intensified by the return of Aaron Donald to the Los Angeles Rams.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a serious head-on collision in July after reportedly taking his eyes off the road to find his phone while using his Tesla's autopilot. The accident resulted in Shanahan sustaining broken bones, facial lacerations, and a concussion.
Further complicating the team's preparations, defensive end Nick Bosa has not practiced in four weeks following ACL surgery last season and remains sidelined. Tight end George Kittle has also been absent from training camp due to surgery for a torn Achilles tendon.
Adding to the off-field challenges, majority owner Jed York was arrested in a prostitution sting in Ohio in August 2026. York subsequently pleaded no contest to lesser charges, but the incident drew attention and potential scrutiny under the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy.
The team's difficulties extended to their 2024 first-round draft pick, Ricky Pearsall, who underwent knee surgery in early August, effectively ending his 2026 season before it could begin.
Meanwhile, Aaron Donald announced his return to the NFL with the Rams after a two-year retirement. Donald, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, cited the Rams' offseason moves to contend for a Super Bowl as motivation for his comeback. He has reportedly maintained a rigorous training regimen during his time away, with his trainer assessing him as having "ain't missed a step."
Donald's return poses a significant challenge for the 49ers, particularly as they are scheduled to play the Rams twice in the NFC West, including the season opener on September 10 in Australia. Shanahan indicated on Monday that the team had not yet determined who would start at left guard to block Donald, describing the situation as "fluid" with three days of practice remaining before the team's departure.
The 49ers recently acquired depth-player Jarrett Patterson from the Houston Texans, who is now also in contention for a starting role at guard or center. "It's still fluid in all our positions in there, so I want to see where he fits in the group in these three days," Shanahan stated. "So, I want to get him in the group, see where he fits, just see him in person, see how he can help us at guard, how he can help us at center and how he stacks up to the other guys."
Despite the mounting challenges, there remains a possibility that Donald may not play in the season opener against the 49ers, as the Rams have received a roster exemption that could allow for additional ramp-up time. This exemption could provide the Rams with flexibility in determining when Donald is ready to return to game action.
