Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay stated that the anticipated return of star defensive player Aaron Donald to the team is not yet finalized. McVay addressed the situation following the Rams' first preseason game, noting that a definitive decision from Donald has not been reached.

Reports had suggested that Donald might announce his intentions to return once the Rams resumed training at their facility on August 7. However, McVay confirmed that the situation is not as straightforward as previously reported. He indicated that Donald is evaluating his own readiness, aiming to perform at his consistently high level and not appear diminished in what could be perceived as a pursuit of a Super Bowl ring.

"I think he earned the right to be able to say he knows himself in terms of, 'Am I able to stack back-to-back days? Am I able to do some of the different things?' Some of those benchmarks that he set out for himself," McVay told reporters. "We are not at that point quite yet."

McVay expressed hope that Donald's return will occur sooner rather than later, while also respecting the player's process. He conveyed that there is a chance a decision could be imminent but stressed that he does not want to impose an artificial deadline. The coach did not elaborate further on specific timelines or benchmarks Donald is working towards.

Donald, a 10-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time Defensive Player of the Year, has been away from the game since 2023. The Rams organization desires his return, and it is understood that Donald himself would like to play if his physical condition allows. However, McVay emphasized that his return is not a certainty at this juncture.
