Aaron Donald's Rams Honeymoon Ends as Broncos, Bo Nix Await

Aaron Donald experienced a warm reception in his return to the Los Angeles Rams, but that "honeymoon" phase is now over. The veteran defensive tackle is preparing for his next challenge: a road game against the Denver Broncos and their quarterback, Bo Nix.

Donald's first game back after a nearly three-year hiatus saw him play 32 snaps, record three tackles (one for a loss), and generate one quarterback pressure. He was double-teamed seven times during the Rams' victory over the New York Giants. Despite these contributions, Donald was critical of his own performance, reportedly watching the game film six times to analyze his movements and identify areas for improvement.

"I think I'm on the right pace," Donald stated. "Pretty confident where I'm at right now." Defensive coordinator Chris Shula echoed a positive outlook, calling Donald "excellent" and "awesome" for the pressure he applied to the quarterback.

The upcoming matchup in Denver presents a different kind of challenge. Bo Nix, known for his mobility and ability to extend plays, is expected to test the Rams' defensive front. Donald acknowledged Nix's ability to move outside the pocket, a characteristic that can make a pass rusher's job more difficult. Shula described Nix as an "ultimate competitor" who will fight for every yard and make plays off-schedule.

The Rams' defense will also need to contend with the Broncos' speedy wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, who can be a significant threat on deep plays. The team's secondary, bolstered by All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, will be tasked with keeping Waddle in front of them. Donald noted that McDuffie, in particular, has caught his eye, calling him "something special."

Another factor for the Rams in Denver is the altitude. Empower Field at Mile High, located one mile above sea level, can impact visiting teams with thinner air leading to increased fatigue. Donald, who has not played at altitude since 2018, admitted he is uncertain how his body will respond but indicated he will "go out there and see."

To manage the effects of altitude and maintain effectiveness, the Rams plan to utilize their depth on the defensive line, rotating players like Kobie Turner, Poona Ford, Braden Fiske, and Tyler Davis to keep them fresh throughout the game. This rotation will be crucial for Donald and the rest of the defensive front as they aim to disrupt Nix and prevent big plays. The focus for Donald shifts from celebrating his return to returning to his everyday role as a professional football player.
