The Los Angeles Rams are optimistic about a potential return for retired defensive tackle Aaron Donald, with coach Sean McVay stating that the team would welcome him back "in a heartbeat" if he decides to come out of retirement. Donald, who has been retired for two years, has reportedly begun a rigorous training regimen similar to what he followed during his playing career, a process he is undertaking to determine if he can meet the physical and mental demands of returning to the NFL.
The impetus for Donald's renewed consideration appears to stem from the Rams' recent trade for pass-rusher Myles Garrett. This acquisition has reportedly piqued Donald's interest, reigniting his competitive drive and making him contemplate teaming up with Garrett to bolster the Rams' defense. The team is seen by many as a strong contender for another Super Bowl appearance, with the trophy seemingly within reach.
"If that is something that he wants to do, we are going to try to be able to make that happen," McVay said. He emphasized that Donald has earned the right to make this decision on his own terms and timeline, and that the team will respect his process. "He is going through his process, and he is putting himself in a position to make a decision, and he’s earned the right to be able to do that," McVay added.
McVay confirmed that he periodically checks in with Donald but refrains from pressuring him for an answer, acknowledging that he, like everyone else, is uncertain about the outcome. "I genuinely do not have an answer on whether he is or isn’t," McVay stated. "I know he’s preparing himself to be able to make that decision. And if he feels good, then you guys know he’s gonna be ready to rock. But if not, he’s earned the right; he doesn’t owe us anything."
The Rams officially opened their training camp at Loyola Marymount University without any major disruptions. Most players were accounted for, with the full team expected to practice soon. The team has also signed first-round pick Ty Simpson. The lack of contract holdouts, quarterback battles, trade requests, or front-office disputes contributed to a drama-free start to camp, with a prevailing team-first mentality evident among the players.
