A Look Ahead: The Great British Bake Off's New Season

The highly anticipated new season of The Great British Bake Off is set to premiere on Tuesday night, with new judge Nigella Lawson joining the familiar faces of Paul Hollywood, Noel Fielding, and host Alison Hammond. Despite earlier rumors of friction, the team appeared in high spirits in a recent behind-the-scenes moment shared on Instagram by Hammond.

Hammond posted a photo featuring herself with Hollywood, Fielding, and Lawson, playfully balanced on her knee. She captioned the image, "We always believe in supporting each other on bake off! Bake off starts tonight on @channel4 @nigellalawson @paul.hollywood @noel_fielding don’t miss it It’s a goodie @britishbakeoff." Lawson responded to the post, calling it a "Great, love-filled BTS moment!"

Other personalities expressed their excitement for the upcoming series. Alan Carr tweeted, "I'm so excited!!!" and 2024 winner Georgie Grasso added, "Cannot wait to watch you all."

Lawson was announced in January as the replacement for Prue Leith, who departed the show after nine years. The spin-off show, Extra Slice, has also been revamped and replaced by Second Helpings, with new presenters Judi Love and Jon Richardson taking over from Jo Brand and Tom Allen.

Reports had circulated regarding potential tension between Lawson and Hollywood, with one source suggesting Lawson found Hollywood's use of a private helicopter to travel to the tent to be "gauche and silly." At the Channel 4 launch event earlier this month, the judges were notably not photographed standing together.

Lawson herself has shared concerns about her role, admitting to Radio Times that she is "no polished" baker and was initially worried about her own finishing skills. She described herself as a home baker, not a professional, and expressed sympathy for the contestants who are also home bakers.

With a long-standing presence in the culinary world through her popular cookbooks and television shows, Lawson brings a wealth of experience. While she has judged professional chefs in MasterChef Australia, her role on Bake Off marks a new direction, scrutinizing amateur bakers. Lawson acknowledged the significant shoes she is filling, calling the transition a "huge leap, but it's been lovely."

Hollywood, who has been with the show since its inception, commented on the dynamic with new judges. "Mary was different to Prue, Prue was different to Nigella and Nigella is different to Mary," he stated. "They each bring their own character to it, and Nigella is a very warm person, especially to the bakers. More so than Mary was and I think more akin to Prue. There's a very nurturing nature to Nigella, which was quite strong this year. Whereas me, I suppose I'm the constant. So I remain in my position of being constructively critical."

Channel 4 has also revealed this year's lineup of amateur bakers, which includes a contestant with two partners who identifies as a 'drag king.'
