90-Year-Old Runner Achieves World Best in 10km Race

A 90-year-old runner has achieved what is believed to be a world best time for his age group after completing a 10km race. Ian Winship finished the community event in Cumbernauld last Sunday with a time of one hour, four minutes, and 37 seconds.
Mr. Winship, a former paratrooper and steeplejack who resides in Cumbernauld, participated in the race alongside his daughter, Fiona Fleming, and grandson, Kyle Fleming.
Scottish Athletics has stated that Mr. Winship's time constitutes a "world best" in the M90 category, rather than a formal "world record." This distinction is due to the lack of precise recording standards for non-professional road running events.
While no official body ratifies performances in this specific age category, there are no known instances of a 90-year-old achieving a faster 10km time.
Upon learning his time, Mr. Winship described himself as emotional and expressed disbelief at the accomplishment. "You can’t get your mind around a world record – a wee guy fae Cumbernauld. It’s just unbelievable. Cumbernauld might be famous now because of me," he said.
When asked about his success, Mr. Winship attributed it to regular exercise and the social connections it provides. He emphasized his daily long walks and the importance of having a purpose, stating, "I want to stay alive. If I sit in the house I’ll vegetate. I must meet people."
Mr. Winship, a veteran of the Suez Crisis in 1956, has set his sights on reaching the age of 100.
His grandson referred to the pensioner's feat as "incredible" and noted his "astounding health" for his age.
North Lanarkshire Council Provost Kenneth Duffy praised Mr. Winship, calling him a "hero" and expressing confidence that his "determination, commitment and enthusiasm" will inspire others.
