Twenty-five years after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a survivor who witnessed the events firsthand from a building adjacent to the World Trade Center (WTC) is reflecting on the profound impact of that day and the lessons learned.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, at 8:46 a.m., 19 hijackers affiliated with Al Qaeda carried out coordinated attacks that killed 2,977 people. The author, working on the top floor of the World Financial Center, heard a massive explosion and saw a gaping hole, flames, and smoke billowing from the North Tower (1 WTC). Shortly after, a second plane struck the South Tower (2 WTC), confirming the nation was under attack.

Amidst the chaos and terror, the survivor recalled a moment of introspection, questioning preparedness for death. This moment was followed by a sense of peace and a realization of divine purpose, leading to a vow to serve God and the nation. This vow later inspired a career change from the financial industry to serving as an FBI Special Agent in 2009.

The experience on 9/11 revealed both the worst and the best of humanity. Acts of selflessness, sacrifice, and courage were displayed by first responders, including the FDNY, NYPD, and Port Authority Police Department, as well as by civilians who risked their lives to save others. The author also paid tribute to the thousands of rescue and recovery workers who have since suffered health issues due to exposure to toxins at Ground Zero.

The leadership of then-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was noted as remarkable, and the unity displayed by New York City, the United States, and the global community in the aftermath was described as inspiring. The survivor emphasized the importance of remembering 9/11 as an attack on American freedom and way of life, countering recent sentiments that question the victims' or the nation's culpability.

Reflecting on the personal impact, the survivor described the trauma as life-altering, with vivid memories of the gruesome images, acrid smell, sounds of destruction, and the desperate choices of victims. These harrowing experiences imparted profound lessons on the fragility of life, the importance of expressing love, and the need to live without regrets.

Enduring Lessons

The survivor shared several key lessons derived from the traumatic experience:

  • Cherish Relationships: Frequently express love to others, as life is unpredictable.
  • Prioritize Meaningful Contributions: Focus on making a positive difference with one's talents and resources, rather than on material possessions, status, or wealth.
  • Live Without Fear: Channel energy from trauma into positive action, refusing to be a victim and seeking inner peace even in chaos.
  • Practice Forgiveness and Gratitude: Show compassion, be grateful, exercise faith, and adhere to the principle of treating others as one wishes to be treated.
  • Live Fully: Take risks and live life without regrets, seizing opportunities and embracing life's experiences.
  • Embrace Faith: Maintain faith, recognizing God's love and presence.

The most significant lesson learned was the reality of a battle between good and evil, urging individuals not to remain neutral but to choose a side, spread light, and live honorably. The message concluded with a declaration of ultimate victory for light over darkness and an affirmation of faith in God.
