An 87-year-old woman was shot in the neck and an 18-year-old man was wounded in the hip during a shooting in the Bronx on Friday afternoon, according to police. Three 16-year-old boys have been arrested in connection with the incident.
The gunfire erupted around 3:50 p.m. on East 224th Street and Barnes Avenue in the Wakefield neighborhood. Both victims were transported to Jacobi Medical Center and reported to be in stable condition.
Police believe the elderly woman may have been struck by a stray bullet. It remains unclear if the 18-year-old man was an intended target.
Two of the three arrested 16-year-olds have been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of criminal possession of a weapon. The third teenager faces a charge of criminal possession of a weapon. Their names have not been released as they are minors.
This incident follows another recent shooting in the Bronx where a 12-year-old boy, the son of a retired NYPD sergeant, was killed by a stray bullet. In that case, authorities arrested 45-year-old William Ferrer, charging him with second-degree murder.
NYPD data indicates that nearly 50 children have been shot in the city this year, highlighting a trend of teen violence.
