Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies have arrested 70 individuals across Mississippi during a two-week operation targeting child exploitation offenders and previously convicted sex offenders. The operation, named "Operation Muddy Waters," also led to the apprehension of illegal immigrants accused of abusing minors.

During the operation, authorities reportedly saved one child from an ongoing sextortion scheme, according to Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch. The multi-agency effort involved the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the Northern and Southern Districts of Mississippi, the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the U.S. Marshals Service, and several sheriff’s offices and police departments.

Among those arrested were individuals accused of traveling to Mississippi for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a minor, establishing communication with minors via social media, and trading child sexual abuse material. Some of the individuals arrested were illegal immigrants, including one from Honduras who allegedly traveled from Tennessee to Mississippi for illicit sexual conduct with a minor. Another illegal immigrant from Bangladesh, who was reportedly on a student visa at the University of Alabama, was arrested for allegedly communicating with a 14-year-old male via social media.

Several individuals with prior convictions were also apprehended. These included an illegal immigrant from Mexico who is allegedly a non-compliant sex offender previously convicted for sexual assault in 2010, and another illegal immigrant from Mexico with a previous felony sexual offense conviction against a child in 2022. U.S. citizens were also arrested on charges related to child exploitation, including allegations of establishing communication with minors online and requesting inappropriate images.

Assistant Special Agent in Charge of HSI Gulfport, Matthew Reidell, stated that the operation demonstrates Homeland Security Investigations' commitment to protecting children and holding offenders accountable. He emphasized the ongoing collaboration with law enforcement partners to prevent further harm.
