Seven teenagers have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Levi Brown, a standout football player gunned down during a game at Independence High School in Bakersfield, California. The arrests, including three juveniles, were made by Bakersfield police in an effort to preempt potential retaliatory gang violence following the incident.
Police announced the additional arrests on Monday, a day after an initial 15-year-old was taken into custody on murder and gang activity charges. Bakersfield Police Chief Brent Stratton stated that the age range of those involved is consistent with individuals often engaged in gang-related shootings, describing it as an "unfortunate reality."
Investigators emphasized that none of the six individuals arrested Monday are directly implicated in Brown's slaying, but their arrests are part of a broader effort to quell escalating tensions. The arrests occurred as the community gathered for a vigil to honor Brown.
Brown, a former quarterback, was remembered by his coach, Vince Carter, as an "exceptional athlete" with significant potential for college football. Manuel Carrizalez, director of Stay Focused Ministries, who knew Brown through mentoring programs, described him as a young man with "a lot of goals, and he was looking towards his future." Brown leaves behind a one-year-old daughter.
The shooting took place Friday night just minutes into the season-opening game between Independence High School and Centennial High School. Police reported that a fight broke out outside the stadium fence shortly before the gunfire. Officers responded to the scene around 8 p.m. and found Brown with gunshot wounds. He was transported to Kern Medical Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
