49ers Wide Receiver Mike Evans Out Against Falcons; Christian Kirk to Debut
The San Francisco 49ers will be without their leading receiver, Mike Evans, for their upcoming game against the Atlanta Falcons, but will see the season debut of Christian Kirk.
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Mike Evans has been ruled out for Sunday's matchup against the Atlanta Falcons due to tendinitis in his Achilles, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Friday. This marks another blow to the 49ers' receiving corps, which has been hampered by multiple injuries.
Evans aggravated his Achilles injury during Monday night's game and was forced to leave before halftime. He has been quarterback Brock Purdy's primary target, accounting for 25 first-down catches through the first six weeks of the season. Despite dealing with broken ribs in addition to his Achilles issue, Evans has amassed 420 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Purdy, the NFL's top-rated passer, will be without Evans, Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, De’Zhaun Stribling, and Ricky Pearsall. The team's depth at receiver has been severely tested, with Shanahan joking that third-string quarterback Kurtis Rourke and backup offensive tackle Enrique Cruz may be pressed into service as emergency receivers. This unusual situation could mean the 49ers will have fewer than 48 active players for the game.
While Evans' production will be missed, the 49ers are anticipating the debut of Christian Kirk, a free-agent signee who injured his calf on the first day of training camp. Kirk returned to practice last week and was a full participant in all three of the team's practices this week. Although listed as questionable, Shanahan confirmed his activation is procedural.
To make room for Kirk, the 49ers released defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo, who they intended to re-sign to the practice squad. With Evans and others sidelined, Brandin Cooks is currently the only healthy wide receiver on the active roster with more than 10 career receptions. Second-year player Jordan Watkins and third-year player Jacob Cowing are expected to take on increased roles.
Shanahan acknowledged the team's injury situation has been a talking point in practice, with players potentially needing to fill in at unfamiliar positions. "Hope it doesn't get to it, and odds are it won't, but it definitely could," he said regarding the possibility of players being asked to step outside their usual roles.
