49ers Wide Receiver Deebo Samuel Sidelined by Hamstring Injury
San Francisco's receiving corps further depleted as Deebo Samuel faces weeks on the sideline.
The San Francisco 49ers, already contending with a depleted receiving unit, have been dealt another blow with the news that wide receiver Deebo Samuel sustained a significant hamstring injury during Sunday's victory over the Seattle Seahawks. The injury occurred in the third quarter as Samuel was running a play out of the backfield, leading to his exit from the game.
Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Monday that Samuel's injury is serious and will cause him to miss "a good chunk of time." This latest setback exacerbates the 49ers' existing receiving depth issues, as they were already without Christian Kirk, Ricky Pearsall, De’Zhaun Stribling, and Demarcus Robinson. Backup linebacker Garrett Wallow also injured his hamstring, with Shanahan describing his injury as "not quite as bad as Deebo" but still expected to keep him out for at least a couple of weeks.
During the game against Seattle, the 49ers at one point had only three healthy receivers available after Jacob Cowing briefly left with an ankle tweak, though he did return. Mike Evans, who is two weeks removed from a rib injury, had a strong performance with seven catches for 113 yards against the Seahawks' defense.
With Samuel sidelined, the 49ers will need to make roster adjustments to maintain five healthy receivers for upcoming games. Shanahan indicated that the team is likely to elevate a receiver from their practice squad, while also remaining open to outside options. Veteran receiver Brandin Cooks, who saw significant playing time after Samuel's departure, could see an increased role. The team is evaluating practice squad players Wesley Grimes, Will Pauling, and Malik Turner, with Turner, who has prior NFL experience and contributes on special teams, being a strong candidate. The 49ers also recently added former Rams receiver Xavier Smith to their practice squad, but he is considered a longer shot.
The 49ers secured a 32-29 win against the Seahawks, improving their season record to 5-0. However, the mounting injuries, particularly at the wide receiver position, present a significant challenge as the team moves forward.
