49ers Urged to Prioritize Nick Bosa's Health Over Monday Night Game

San Francisco 49ers star edge rusher Nick Bosa will likely miss Monday night's game against the Commanders as he continues to recover from a calf strain, a decision that strategists argue is a prudent move for the team's long-term success. Bosa, who had expressed optimism about returning after the team's Week 2 injury, has not practiced for two consecutive days and has not been seen participating even in limited drills.

While Bosa's absence is a blow, the 49ers' commanding 5-0 start to the season and a significant lead in the NFC West provide a buffer. A victory Thursday night by the Seahawks over the Rams, which resulted in a Sam Darnold interception, further solidified the 49ers' dominant position, placing them three games ahead of their closest division rivals in the loss column.

This strong standing allows the 49ers to manage injuries conservatively. Beyond Bosa, other key players are dealing with ailments, including wide receiver Mike Evans (broken ribs and Achilles soreness), fullback Kyle Juszczyk (hyperextended knee), defensive tackle Gracen Halton (quad), left tackle Colton McKivitz (illness), and backup guard Carver Willis (toe). General Manager John Lynch emphasized the team's goal to ensure Bosa returns fully healed. "We want to make sure that when we get him back, we have him back for good. You know that he’s not gonna reinjure it," Lynch stated.

Coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that Bosa's availability hinges on his recovery and the risk of re-injury, rather than the short week of preparation. "It’s more about how, is he fully recovered from the calf and what are the percentages of him reinjuring that?" Shanahan explained.

The 49ers' impressive performance, even with multiple players sidelined, demonstrates their depth and resilience. Their victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 5, where they managed five sacks and pressured the quarterback on 40% of dropbacks without Bosa, underscores their capability to win crucial games even with key players out.

With a favorable schedule ahead, including games against the Commanders and the Falcons, followed by a bye week, the 49ers have an opportunity to prioritize player health. The current situation allows them to strategically rest Bosa and other injured players, ensuring they are at full strength for the latter half of the season and the playoffs. Bosa himself has indicated a target return for the game against Atlanta, a plan the team appears set to follow.
