The San Francisco 49ers have finalized their initial 53-man roster, a process that head coach Kyle Shanahan described as a "starting bell" rather than a definitive conclusion. The team's most significant moves occurred at the offensive line, a position group that saw considerable flux throughout training camp.

In an effort to address interior offensive line needs, the 49ers waived Robert Jones, who had been a contender for the left guard position. Concurrently, the team acquired veteran interior lineman Jarrett Patterson via trade, a move expected to bolster the guard and center positions.

Roster Breakdown

Quarterbacks will consist of Brock Purdy, Mac Jones, and Kurtis Rourke. Rourke, a seventh-round pick in 2025, has impressed enough to be considered Purdy's backup for the upcoming season, with Jones likely seeking other opportunities next year. Rourke is expected to return to practice this week after sustaining three broken ribs.

The running back and fullback contingent includes Christian McCaffrey, Kaelon Black, Jordan James, and Kyle Juszczyk. The team waived Sincere McCormick and released Khalil Herbert, with the possibility of retaining them on the practice squad.

At wide receiver, the 49ers will carry six players: Mike Evans, De’Zhaun Stribling, Deebo Samuel, Demarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowing, and Jordan Watkins. Christian Kirk has been placed on injured reserve and will be eligible to return after Week 3, with his first game potentially in Week 5. The team opted for the upside of Jordan Watkins over the special teams experience of KhaDarel Hodge, who may also return to the practice squad.

The tight end group features George Kittle, Jake Tonges, Luke Farrell, and Brayden Willis. Carrying a fourth tight end in Willis provides depth in case Kittle requires additional recovery time from the Achilles injury he sustained in January.

The offensive line now stands at nine players: Trent Williams, Carver Willis, Jake Brendel, Dominick Puni, Colton McKivitz, Enrique Cruz Jr., Vederian Lowe, Connor Colby, and Jarrett Patterson. Austen Pleasants is designated for return from injured reserve, while Brett Toth and Nick Zakelj will miss the season due to injury. The team's offensive line must now prepare to face Los Angeles Rams' Aaron Donald in their season opener.

Defensive linemen include Nick Bosa, Osa Odighizuwa, Keion White, Alfred Collins, C.J. West, Romello Height, Gracen Halton, Sam Okuayinonu, James Thompson Jr., and Ogbo Okoronkwo. Mykell Williams will remain on injured reserve until at least Week 5. Rookie defensive tackle Gracen Halton's injury may have opened a roster spot for undrafted free agent James Thompson Jr.

Linebacker roles will be filled by Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, Jaden Dugger, Garret Wallow, Tatum Bethune, Nick Martin, and Luke Gifford. Jaden Dugger has emerged as a key player fitting the team's defensive scheme. Deion Jones was released, but he could be re-signed as a vested veteran. Martin and Gifford are candidates for injured reserve.

Cornerbacks are Deommodore Lenoir, Renardo Green, Upton Stout, Jack Jones, and Nate Hobbs. This group has been notably stable throughout training camp.

Safeties include Ji’Ayir Brown, Marques Sigle, Malik Mustapha, and Siran Neal. Sigle has emerged as the starter opposite Brown, with Siran Neal securing the final spot due to his special teams ability and versatility.

Specialists consist of kicker Eddy Piñeiro. The team plans to re-sign punter Corliss Waitman and long snapper Jon Weeks once roster spots are opened by placing players on injured reserve.
