49ers Suffer First Loss of Season to Falcons Amidst Turnovers and Injuries
San Francisco's uncharacteristic mistakes in opposing territory led to a 26-20 defeat, marking their first loss of the season.
The San Francisco 49ers sustained their first defeat of the season on Sunday, falling to the Atlanta Falcons 26-20. The loss was punctuated by four turnovers in Falcons territory, a lack of takeaways, and an inability to prevent Atlanta from extending drives through penalties and missed assignments. The defeat sends San Francisco into its bye week with a 6-1 record, still leading the NFC West.
Quarterback Brock Purdy received a C grade for his performance. Trailing 19-14 entering the second half, Purdy's attempts to regain the lead were stymied by turnovers. An interception intended to be thrown away landed in the hands of Falcons safety Jessie Bates III. Later, after a touchdown pass to Jordan Watkins was overturned, Purdy missed a crucial third-down throw and was sacked on fourth down, giving the ball back to Atlanta. These were Purdy's first multi-interception game since Week 12 of the previous season.
Running backs earned a B grade. Christian McCaffrey, who left the game temporarily in the second quarter with a thigh injury, accumulated 100 total yards from scrimmage. However, the running game also saw fumbles from Kaelon Black and third-string back Jordan James in crucial moments, including Black's touchdown scamper that was followed by a costly fumble in Atlanta territory.
Wide receivers and tight ends were graded a C. The team navigated the game without key pass-catchers Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel, among others. Brandin Cooks and Jordan Watkins were the primary targets, with Watkins being unable to secure a potential touchdown catch in the end zone. Tight end George Kittle also fumbled after a catch, contributing to the team's turnover woes. Coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged the importance of ball security, stating, "When it comes down to the turnovers, we’ve got to protect the ball better."
The offensive line received a C+. After a streak of pass protection, the line has surrendered multiple sacks in the past three games. A critical sack on fourth down in the fourth quarter prevented the 49ers from potentially closing the gap.
The defensive line was graded a D, notably missing Nick Bosa for the fifth consecutive game. The unit failed to record a sack or a single hit on Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Penix was able to extend plays outside the pocket, including a touchdown pass. An offsides penalty on defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa negated a crucial fourth-down stop, allowing Atlanta to kick a field goal before halftime.
Linebackers received a B. Despite Bijan Robinson's 122 yards from scrimmage, the linebacking corps, with the return of Dre Greenlaw, managed to limit the Falcons' overall ground game to 82 yards on 29 carries. Fred Warner and Jaden Dugger made key stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Defensive backs were graded a D. Cornerback Jack Jones was repeatedly targeted and committed a costly pass interference penalty. Nine different Falcons receivers caught passes from Penix, who completed 25 of 34 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns, outperforming Purdy in passer rating.
Special teams received an F. Kicker Eddy Pineiro missed an extra point, and the kick return unit allowed significant yardage on multiple returns. The team also dealt with injuries impacting their return specialists.
