49ers Secure Third Straight Win Amidst Growing Injury Concerns
Despite key injuries, San Francisco extends its winning streak to 3-0 with a victory over the Cardinals.
The San Francisco 49ers continued their winning streak, improving to 3-0 with a 36-30 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. The win, however, was overshadowed by a growing list of injured players, including Pro Bowl wide receiver Deebo Samuel and offensive tackle Trent Williams.
Deebo Samuel opened the scoring with an 80-yard touchdown on a hook-and-ladder play early in the game. Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 14 of his 26 other attempts for 215 yards, with his performance marked by a missed pass on a key play.
The 49ers' offense, already depleted by preseason injuries to wide receivers Christian Kirk and Ricky Pearsall, and rookie De’Zhaun Stribling, lost another receiver when Mike Evans left the game in the first half with a rib injury. Despite these setbacks, the team outgained Arizona 437 yards to 365, though they ran significantly fewer plays.
On the defensive side, the 49ers were without six defensive linemen, including Nick Bosa. This limited their ability to pressure Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who threw for two touchdowns in the second half to narrow the deficit. Despite the pressure from players like Dre Greenlaw and Keion White, the defense struggled to get off the field.
Veteran tight end George Kittle played a crucial role in compensating for the offensive injuries. He caught six of his seven targets for 82 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his two-game total to 162 yards and three scores. His performance is notable given he is less than a year removed from an Achilles tear.
The 49ers maintained their trend of strong starts, pitching a first-quarter shutout for the third consecutive game and outscoring opponents 17-0 in the opening period. They held a 17-6 lead at halftime, but the Cardinals mounted a comeback in the second half, scoring touchdowns on three of their four possessions after the break.
New receiver Jordan Watkins also made an impact. Inactive for the first two games, the second-year player had two catches for 60 yards against the Cardinals. His first reception set up an early touchdown, and his second contributed to a 57-yard field goal, potentially earning him a larger role if Evans faces an extended absence.
Looking ahead, the 49ers face a more challenging schedule, with upcoming games against the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks. Their 3-0 start provides a buffer as they await the return of injured players.
