49ers Secure NFC West Control with Thrilling Victory Over Seahawks
Brock Purdy leads a late comeback as San Francisco edges Seattle 32-29 in a hard-fought divisional clash.
The San Francisco 49ers have taken a commanding lead in the NFC West after a dramatic 32-29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Lumen Field. Quarterback Brock Purdy orchestrated a crucial late-game drive, overcoming defensive pressure that has historically troubled him to secure the win.
The game, which featured multiple lead changes, ties, and seven turnovers, showcased the intense rivalry between the two NFC West opponents. Purdy connected with tight end Brandin Cooks for a touchdown and then found Mike Evans for a successful two-point conversion, a sequence that ultimately sealed the victory for the 49ers.
“That was the one drive that got us going,” said 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. The team improved to 5-0 against the Seahawks under his tenure. Prior to this pivotal drive, the 49ers had struggled to sustain scoring drives, with their initial points coming off turnovers. Renardo Green intercepted two passes, Fred Warner forced a fumble, and Gracen Halton recovered another fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.
The 49ers' defense was instrumental in the first half, capitalizing on Seahawks' mistakes. Green's two interceptions, including one on Sam Darnold's first pass of the second half, and Warner's forced fumble were key moments. Halton's fumble recovery for a touchdown just before halftime gave the 49ers a significant, albeit temporary, advantage.
Mike Evans, who joined the 49ers recently, made a substantial impact in his first game against the Seahawks. Despite playing through rib issues, Evans recorded seven catches for 113 yards, including four receptions for 75 yards on the game-winning fourth-quarter drive. He also secured the crucial two-point conversion. "Obviously, he's a game-changer," Purdy said of Evans. "He can make defenses pay, and I thought today he did a great job of that, going up to get the ball multiple times."
Fred Warner also delivered a strong performance, leading the team with 10 tackles and forcing his 20th career fumble, a franchise record. His presence was particularly vital as his fellow linebacker, Dre Greenlaw, was ejected in the second half for a headbutt following a late hit.
The 49ers faced challenges with penalties, committing eight for 70 yards, uncharacteristic for a team that had been among the least penalized. This included a personal foul on Greenlaw that contributed to Seahawks' field position. Despite the infractions and facing a strong Seahawks defense that sacked Purdy twice, the 49ers' offensive line managed to create running lanes, contributing to 94 rushing yards on 24 carries.
Adding to the offensive disruption, George Kittle was sidelined with illness, and Deebo Samuel left the game with a hamstring injury. However, the 49ers' special teams also played a role, with punter Corliss Waitman consistently flipping field position, pinning the Seahawks deep within their own territory multiple times. Waitman's performance set up the crucial fumble recovery for a touchdown by Halton before halftime.
