San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a high-ankle sprain, a timeline that has intensified scrutiny on the team's training and medical staff. The injury occurred during the 49ers' Week 1 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Australia.

Stribling initially sustained an ankle issue late in the first quarter and was evaluated in the blue tent. He was deemed questionable to return but was cleared and re-entered the game early in the second quarter. Shortly thereafter, on a second-and-5 play, he fell to the turf clutching the same ankle and was carted off.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that the ligament sprain could require surgery if it does not heal properly, potentially sidelining the second-round pick for an extended period. Stribling, who had generated considerable buzz during the preseason, did not record a reception before his injury.

This incident comes on the heels of a critical assessment of the 49ers' training and performance staff, which received a C- grade, ranking 32nd out of 32 teams in the NFL Players Association's annual player report card. The survey, which collected responses from 1,759 players, also saw the 49ers' training room facilities receive a C- grade. Overall, the 49ers ranked 14th among all teams.

In response to player feedback and concerns, the 49ers had invested approximately $9 million in upgrades to their training facilities, including new hot and cold tubs, and hired three new physical therapists. General manager John Lynch had highlighted these improvements in the spring.

However, the continued injuries, including Stribling's, have led to renewed questions about the effectiveness of the team's player health and performance protocols. The team has faced a history of injury concerns, including previous issues with players like Ricky Pearsall and Brock Purdy, who initially tried to play through injuries before requiring season-ending or prolonged recovery periods.

Stribling was the 33rd overall pick in the recent NFL Draft. His absence marks another blow for the 49ers' receiving corps, which already saw its 2026 first-round pick, Ricky Pearsall, placed on injured reserve with a season-ending injury sustained in Week 3 of the previous year.
