San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York was arrested Sunday in East Palestine, Ohio, on charges of engaging in prostitution and possessing criminal tools. The arrest was made by Detective Daniel Haueter of the East Palestine Police Department, who is part of the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force.
Haueter reportedly created an undercover advertisement on a website known for prostitution, which York allegedly responded to, agreeing to pay $140 for sex. According to a court filing, York arrived at a trailer park to meet the woman and was taken into custody by Haueter, who found York in possession of the cellphone used to arrange the encounter.
A Detective's Reputation
According to a 2024 newsletter from the Ohio Attorney General's office, Haueter has a reputation for being a prolific prostitution-sting detective. The newsletter described him as a "trap-setting agent" who specializes in snaring "especially repugnant creatures," using bait such as ads that appear to be posted by a mother and her underage daughter.
"Catching rats and other vermin starts with using the right bait," the newsletter stated. "And when Detective Dan Haueter sets the trap, they come scurrying out of the shadows."
Haueter has been in law enforcement for over three decades and has focused on preventing internet sex crimes since 2004. His undercover operations have led to arrests of individuals from both within and outside of Ohio. In one instance cited, Haueter arrested a man who drove two hours from Erie, and another from upstate New York who had detoured en route to a Porsche festival after responding to a similar ad.
Legal Proceedings
Following his arrest, York was charged with one count of engaging in prostitution and one count of possessing criminal tools. On Monday, he pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct and to the count of possessing criminal tools. Court records indicate he was sentenced to one day in jail, with credit for time served, and ordered to pay $1,150 in fines.
York, who is also the CEO of the San Francisco 49ers, filed for divorce in Santa Clara County in May. A spokesperson for the NFL stated the league is aware of the arrest and that the situation will be reviewed under its personal conduct policy. The 49ers organization issued a statement indicating they would not comment further on the matter, characterizing it as a resolved legal issue.
