49ers Overcome Preseason Woes, Secure Dominant Week 1 Victory

The San Francisco 49ers returned home with more than just a division win following their Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. The team's dominant 27-7 victory provided crucial answers to two significant pre-season concerns: the strength of their offensive and defensive lines.

Despite facing adversity, including injuries to key defensive linemen Alfred Collins and Sam Okuayinonu, and an open competition at left guard, the 49ers' front lines outperformed expectations. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed his confidence in Brock Purdy to lead the offense and highlighted the pivotal roles of Christian McCaffrey, Fred Warner, and Nick Bosa.

The defensive line, short-handed as it was, managed to generate consistent pressure on Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. While neither team recorded a sack, the 49ers' defensive front pressured Stafford on 37.5 percent of the Rams' dropbacks. This pressure was largely achieved without extensive blitzing, with defensive coordinator Raheem Morris employing a mix of four and five-man rushes.

"He mixed it up really well throughout the game," Shanahan said of Morris's scheme. "He did a real good job just mixing up the fronts, the looks, the stunts, picking the right times when to pressure, some four-man, some five-man."

Even Khalid Kareem, who joined the team from Atlanta's practice squad and traveled to Australia on his own, contributed with a hurry in 19 snaps. "Usually guys this time of year, you don’t expect a guy to be that ready," said defensive end Nick Bosa. "He told us about his travel beforehand too. It was rough. But he looked pretty good."

On the offensive side, the interior offensive line, particularly at left guard, also delivered a strong performance. Connor Colby played all 65 snaps at left guard, solidifying the position and allowing the run game to flourish. According to Pro Football Focus, two of Christian McCaffrey’s longest runs of the day, a 16-yard gain and a 14-yarder, came through gaps near Colby.

"I thought he did awesome," McCaffrey commented on Colby's performance. "Not just doing his job but going above and beyond, finishing guys downfield. He did an incredible job. I think the whole O-line really set the tone for that game."

The 49ers rushed for 174 yards on 30 carries, with 101 yards coming on 18 carries between the tackles. On average, 49ers ball carriers gained 2.79 yards before contact, a figure that led the NFL in Week 1. Shanahan lauded the interior offensive line's efforts, noting their effectiveness in both pass protection and run blocking.

"I thought they were unbelievable," Shanahan said. "The pass protection especially, just a huge challenge going against that team and the way they were all tied together as a unit. A lot of good individual plays, but just how they did as a group throughout the whole game was really impressive. And they run-blocked very well too."

While Shanahan acknowledged that his screen-heavy offense helped get the ball out of Purdy's hands quickly against a Rams defense that rarely rushed more than four, the overall performance of both lines provided a positive outlook for the 49ers as they continue their season.
