49ers' Offense Falters as Key Receiver Mike Evans Exits Game With Injury
The San Francisco 49ers faced offensive struggles after wide receiver Mike Evans left their victory over the Commanders with Achilles tendinitis.
The San Francisco 49ers experienced a significant dip in offensive performance during their 23-17 win against the Commanders on Monday night, largely attributed to the departure of wide receiver Mike Evans due to Achilles tendinitis. The injury forced Evans out of the game late in the first half, and the 49ers' offense subsequently struggled, nearly allowing a 20-point lead to evaporate.
Coach Kyle Shanahan expressed cautious optimism regarding Evans' condition, suggesting it was "Achilles tendinitis" and that he did not plan further testing. However, reports from NBC Sports Bay Area insider Jennifer Lee Chan indicated that the 49ers were preparing for Evans to miss at least the following week's game against Atlanta. This assessment contrasted with Shanahan's post-game comments, where he expressed hope for Evans' return in the subsequent week.
"Hopefully he’ll be able to play next week," Shanahan said. "But if not, we’ll have to have the rest of the group step up and hopefully get him healed up after the bye week." Shanahan noted that the issue flared up for the first time this season and added to the receiver's existing broken ribs from Week 3. Evans was unable to participate fully in practice this week due to the injury.
Despite the injury, Evans led the 49ers with 93 receiving yards on three catches before leaving the game. His absence, coupled with the existing injuries to other receivers, significantly impacted the team's offensive momentum. After scoring a field goal to start the second half, the 49ers offense went three-and-out on three consecutive possessions, allowing the Commanders to score two touchdowns.
Tight end George Kittle acknowledged Evans' impact but emphasized the team's need for better execution. "Obviouslly he would’ve helped," Kittle said. "We’ve just got to execute, and I don’t think we did."
The 49ers improved to 6-0 with the win, but the offensive performance raised concerns about the team's ability to compensate for key absences. With Evans sidelined, the receiving corps could be led by Brandin Cooks, Jordan Watkins, and Jacob Cowing in the upcoming game against the Falcons.
Adding to the team's receiving depth challenges, Christian Kirk, who has been recovering from a calf injury, was listed as questionable for the game against Washington and was only described as a "possibility" to be activated for the Atlanta game. Demarcus Robinson (high-ankle sprain), De’Zhaun Stribling, and Deebo Samuel (hamstring) are still further away from returning, and Ricky Pearsall is out for the season.
The 49ers signed Evans despite his history of missed games in recent seasons, valuing his caliber of talent. The current situation underscores his importance to the team's offensive strategy. "When you have Achilles tendonitis like he does, it kind of is what it is," Shanahan said. "It flared up tonight. I hope he recovers throughout the week, but you don’t think it’s a long-term thing. But right now, it almost cost him this game. It cost him two quarters."
