49ers Maintain Perfect Record With Narrow Victory Over Commanders
Brock Purdy sets NFL record as San Francisco edges Washington 23-17 on Monday Night Football.
The San Francisco 49ers maintained their perfect season record, narrowly defeating the Washington Commanders 23-17 on Monday Night Football. The victory extended the 49ers' lead to 20 points in the second half before the Commanders mounted a comeback with 14 unanswered points after halftime.
Quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a career milestone early in the game, becoming the highest-rated passer in NFL history on his fifth pass attempt. He finished the night completing 21 of 29 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown. Purdy also contributed 28 rushing yards on five scrambles, outgaining the Commanders' quarterback on the ground.
Christian McCaffrey was a central figure for the 49ers' offense, carrying the load in a way not seen in previous games this season. He was responsible for two of the 49ers' three first-half touchdowns and amassed 82 yards on 16 touches before halftime. While the team finished with 126 rushing yards on 29 carries, McCaffrey's performance was marred by his first fumble of the season, which occurred inside the red zone and cost the 49ers points.
San Francisco's receiving corps faced challenges, with Mike Evans aggravating an Achilles injury and leaving the game before halftime. Evans had contributed 94 yards on three catches in the first half, but his absence impacted the passing game in the second half. McCaffrey led the team with nine receptions for 53 yards, and George Kittle added five catches for 69 yards. No other receiver had more than one catch.
The offensive line, anchored by Trent Williams and Dominick Puni, provided solid protection, largely keeping Purdy upright against a Commanders defense that frequently blitzed. The line was credited with opening holes for McCaffrey's touchdowns.
The defensive line delivered a strong performance, especially considering the absence of Nick Bosa. The unit recorded four sacks of Commanders' quarterback Jayden Daniels, limiting Washington's ground game to 53 yards on 17 carries. Osa Odighizuwa, Mykel Williams, and Gracen Halton were credited with sacks, and Keion White also recorded one on the final play of the game. Romello Height forced an intentional grounding penalty that contributed to the Commanders' difficult final drive.
Linebacker Fred Warner made a crucial open-field tackle late in the fourth quarter, though a subsequent penalty extended the Commanders' drive. Safety Malik Mustapha later atoned for the penalty by providing pass defense on a critical fourth-down attempt, securing the ball back for the 49ers with under two minutes remaining.
The defensive backs faced difficulties containing Washington's receivers, particularly Stefon Diggs. Despite the Commanders losing key receiver Terry McLaurin to injury, Daniels completed 29 of 40 passes for 300 yards, achieving the highest passer rating against the 49ers this season.
Special teams struggled, with Eddy Pineiro missing an extra point, his third of the season and seventh in his 49ers career. Jacob Cowing also muffed a punt return for the second consecutive week, which resulted in the Commanders taking over on short field.
The Commanders, after this loss, fell to a 1-4-1 record on the season.
