49ers GM John Lynch Addresses Fan Concerns Over Mike Evans' Injury Status
General manager John Lynch stated the team is prioritizing performance while acknowledging fan sentiment regarding player health.
San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch has pushed back against what he described as "noise" from fans regarding the handling of wide receiver Mike Evans' Achilles tendinitis. The team is currently 6-0 to start the season, but injuries, particularly at the wide receiver position, have become a concern.
Evans was forced to miss the second half of the 49ers' recent victory over the Washington Commanders due to the injury. Speaking on KNBR, Lynch addressed Evans' availability for the upcoming game against the Atlanta Falcons, stating that his status is still "TBD." He indicated that the team would use the remaining days before the game to assess Evans' condition.
"We’ve got a couple more days and we’re gonna take every bit of those to ascertain where Mike is at," Lynch said. "He’s done a really good job treating this thing. Obviously, we know of Mike’s toughness. We’ll let these next couple days play out and make a decision when we have to."
Evans, 33, has been a key offensive player for the 49ers this season, accumulating 27 receptions for 420 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Lynch acknowledged the fan sentiment that Evans should be rested until fully recovered, especially with the team's strong start and the upcoming bye week.
"I love our fans, the Faithful," Lynch responded when asked about resting Evans. "Our job is not to focus on the noise, but to focus on what we believe is right for our football team. And that’s what we continue to do."
Lynch emphasized the team's objective to win every game. "You try to win every game in this league, so if our players are healthy and we feel good about their ability to not put themselves in more harm and go effect the game in a positive way, that’s what you do in this league," he stated. He concluded by saying, "I’ll just leave it at that."
The 49ers' undefeated record provides a cushion in the competitive NFC West, but Lynch's stance suggests a philosophy of playing to win each week, even with players managing injuries. The team will continue to evaluate Evans' status ahead of their next matchup.
